This week, our Authors After dark feature focuses on Kelly Gay.
Most recently published work: A BEAUTIFUL EVIL (YA/Kelly Keaton)
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a book worm, and read across many genres. I like the idea of gardening, but can never seem to stick to it as much as I’d like. I’m a mom—have two kids (one a toddler, and one in middle school), so life is pretty hectic between them and writing as two different people.
I guess you could describe my style as fast-paced and action-oriented with a special eye toward strong female heroines, family, cool settings, and a dash (or more if the case calls for it) romance.
Complete this sentence: I write urban fantasy because...
I like all the complications, intricate world details, action, mythology, and relationships that arise from characters living in a modern day setting, but where the fantastical/supernatural also exist.
Do you prefer to see your work in electronic, print or both forms? Why?
Both because I want my work to be available to everyone and to give my readers options to read in print or electronically.
a. Hero: Acheron (Sherrilyn Kenyon); Robin of Artane, Connor McDougal, and James MacLeod (Lynn Kurland); Nicholas Stafford (Jude Devereaux).
b. Heroine: Sookie Stackhouse (Charlaine Harris); Kate Daniels (Ilona Andrews)
c. Villain: Here I pick my own: Athena from my YA series. I adore writing her. She’s so wicked and hardcore and multi-dimensional.
d. Conflict: In the hands of my favorite authors, all conflict is good.
e. Happy ending: The end of MUCH ADO IN THE MOONLIGHT by Lynn Kurland. Love! And A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR by Jude Devereaux – so good and bittersweet all at the same time.
Either the first in my adult series, THE BETTER PART OF DARKNESS or DARKNESS BECOMES HER, the first of my YAs. In both, my style is similar in that there are strong female characters, a lot of action, and unique worlds. The YA’s are more focused on Greek mythology and set in an alternate version of New Orleans (where the city is now privately owned and has become a sanctuary for all things supernatural). In my adult world, the creatures and beings that inspired our ideas of heaven and hell live and work among us. And while my MCs are strong, independent women, they are on difference paths -- one is a 31 yr old single mother and one is 17 and just discovering who she is and what she wants. I have a lot of cross-over readers who have enjoyed both series and those who stick to adult or YA.
Here's a little of what Kelly Gay has to offer her readers:
The Gods & Monsters series:
Tell us about your upcoming work.
My next work to release is Charlie Madigan #4 SHADOWS BEFORE THE SUN. It hits the stands July 31, so just in time for AAD.
I’ve heard really great things about the con. It sounds laid back and a great opportunity to meet up with readers, spend some time with them, and just have fun.
Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t think to ask.
Okay, something random… I can’t go to sleep if I know there is a drawer, or cabinet, or closet door open somewhere in the house. Not sure why, but it will bother me to the point I will *have* to get up and close it. All things must be closed, LOL!
Really looking forward to meeting everyone in NOLA!!
