Today, BookWenches focuses the spotlight on author Melissa Schroeder.
Name: Melissa Schroeder, and I write as Kiera West exclusively for Siren Publishing
Most recently published work.
Callum the first of my Cursed Clan books
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a military wife who was raised as military brat. I have a Monty Python sense of humor that constantly gets me in trouble. I love a rainy day and cold weather. We are on our last assignment (which I get goose bumps just thinking about it) with our two human daughters and two dog daughters. I spend much of my time complaining about bugs.
Describe your writing style using just one sentence.
Erotic or sensual romance with a slap and a tickle pretty much sums it up.
Complete this sentence: I write _____ because…
I write romance because I like happy endings.
I like both. As a reader, I am more interested in electronic because that is what I read. The only time I pick up a print is for an old favorite that isn’t in electronic yet. I just like seeing my books out there in all forms because readers have preferences, and I want to make sure they can find what they want.
Tell us about your favorites and why:
a. Hero: Evan Chambers from A Little Harmless Obsession. He is still my favorite because he was so damaged but rose above it to have a good life.
b. Heroine: Mila from my EC erotic futuristic Hunting Mila. Mila is only 100 pounds at best but has one of those bigger than life personalities.
c. Villain: He Who Should Not Be Named- seriously, for a whole series JK Rowling was able to keep this guy mean enough to scare the bejesus out of us. That is not easy to do.
d. Conflict: The entire Harry Potter series. Again, Rowling was able to keep the internal and external plot going just like the bad dude. Each book’s conflict rose along with the story line. Brilliant writing.
e. Happy ending: A Little Harmless Obsession, Mainly because the heroine May Aiona suggests that the hero, Evan, might not be able to father children as a way to convince him they don’t have to worry about passing down bad genes.
For readers who have never read your work before, what book would you suggest they read first? Why?
For erotic romance, I would say A Little Harmless Lie (if you don’t have a problem reading out of order). It is a reader favorite and I get more questions and comments about Micah, the hero.
For historical/mainstream, I would say The Spy Who Loved Her. It is my favorite historical I have written so far.
Here is a little of what Melissa Schroeder has to offer her readers:

To keep her safe, he will not only have to risk his life, but also his heart.
Once Upon an Accident, Book 3
Lady Anna was once considered the catch of the season. Now, three years after she fell for a man who tried to murder her cousin, she eases her guilt with charity work at an orphanage. Until her mother insists she do her duty.
Attending her cousin’s ball is irritating enough. It’s her one dance with Daniel, the unscrupulous Earl of Bridgerton, that rubs her nerves raw. And oddly leaves her senses on the edge of arousal.
The ton sees Daniel as a scoundrel. In truth, like centuries of Bridgertons before him, he leads a vast network of spies, protecting England from her worst enemies. His resolve never to marry means the one woman he’s always wanted—Lady Anna—is off limits. Especially now that his father’s murderer is coming after him as well.
At first, Anna wonders if Daniel was put on this earth just to annoy her. It’s only when she finds him injured that his mask begins to fall away—and so do the barriers between them. But their flaring passion puts her right where Daniel didn’t want her. Next on a killer’s list.
Warning: This book contains spies, musicales, men who think they know everything, women who know they do not, naughty liaisons, matchmaking mamas, and a seduction that will curl your toes.

To prove her love and save her man, she has to go above and beyond the call of duty.
Infatuation: A Little Military Harmless Romance
Francis McKade is a man in lust. He’s had a crush on his best friend’s little sister for years but he has never acted on it. Besides that fact that she’s Malachi’s sister, he’s a Seal and he learned his lesson with his ex-fiancé. Women do not like being left alone for long months at a time. Still, at a wedding in Hawaii anything can happen—and does. Unfortunately, after the best night of his life, he and Mal are called away to one of their most dangerous missions.
Shannon is blown over by Kade. She’s always had a crush on him and after their night together, it starts to feel a little like love. But, after the mission, Kade never calls or writes and she starts to wonder if it was all a dream. Until one night, her brother Mal drags him into her bar and grill and Shannon gets the shock of her life.
Kade isn’t the man Shannon knew in Hawaii, or even the last few years. Losing a friend and being injured, especially one who had never felt so vulnerable. He still can’t shake the terror that keeps him up at night. Worse, he is realizing that the career he loves just might be over.
Shannon is still mad, but she can’t help but hurt for the man she loves. He is darker, a bit more dangerous, but beneath that, he is the Kade she's known for so many years. When he pushes her to her limits in the bedroom, Shannon refuses to back down. One way or another, this military man is going to learn there is no walking away from love—not while she still has breath in her body.
Warning: This book contains two infatuated lovers, a hard-headed military man, a determined woman, some old friends, and a little taste of New Orleans. Of course, there is a Dom who wants to be in a charge and a sub who wants to challenge him. As always, ice water is suggested while reading. It might be the first military Harmless book, but the only thing that has changed is how hot our hero looks in his uniform—not to mention out of it.
This is an original novella that is approx 32,000 words. It is an interracial military romance with light bdsm.

Will desire be the answer or the ruin of the entire clan?
As Laird, Callum Lennon feels he has always failed to protect his cousins. Callum’s impulsiveness caused the death of his father and the experience has scarred not only his body, but his soul. From that point on, he made sure to always go with the more logical choice in every matter. When his younger cousin Angus finds clues that might help break the curse, Callum begrudgingly hires Phoebe Chilton to investigate. Callum doesn’t like bringing outsiders into their family affairs. Their life would become fodder for the tabloids if anyone were to find out about the curse. It doesn’t help that the instant he meets Dr. Chilton he’s attracted. But, he doesn’t really have a choice because she might be their last hope.
An expert in archeology, Phoebe has always been dwarfed by her parents’ shadow. Their high standards had her in college by thirteen and earning a second PhD by twenty-two. But her career and her broken marriage have left her needing something more than just diplomas and degrees. She wants to prove that her interest in legends, especially Celtic legends, is as important as her parents’ work. When the Lennon family contacts her, she sees the opportunity to win a massive research grant. With a long-time rival breathing down her back, she jumps at the Lennons’ offer her, hoping it will ensure her the grant. But uncovering the Lennon family secrets, and her attraction to Callum, could prove more than she can handle.
Forces outside the family are determined to ensure that they fail. When an old enemy threatens both the well being of the clan and the fragile new love, Callum will have to choose between believing his mind or his heart.

Why are you attending Authors After Dark 2012? Why should your readers attend?
Joy Harris of Joyfully Reviewed and Ali Flores of Simply Ali told me about AAD when they visited me in 2010. They told me I would love it, and I did. I had such a good time in Philly. I have been going to reader cons for the past 7 years and I found it to be the most comfortable con. It was laid back and I loved the contact I had with readers. I go to cons to meet readers. AAD gave me the ability to hang out with more readers and Stella has been fantastic about allowing me to sponsor things for readers. Kris Cook and I are doing another Open Bar and I am throwing a Cursed n Blood party. I think for readers, you get a lot of face time with authors at AAD. The atmosphere allows for a lot of opportunities for readers to get to meet their favorite authors and discover new authors. Also, BOOKS. AAD is the best con out there for free books to readers.
A personal note to my readers.
I want to thank my readers for the last seven years of support. Thanks to them, I have been able to branch out and go into self-publishing which is allowing more freedom than I have ever have. Thank you, everyone.
