It’s a busy summer season for me! EMBRACE ME AT DAWN, book 5 of the Doomsday Brethren series, comes out on May 29. MINE TO HOLD, book 6 of the Wicked Lovers series, releases June 5. I’ve got a novella in the HOT IN HANDCUFFS anthology, due out July 3, as well as THEIR VIRGIN CONCUBINE, which is book 3 in the Masters of Ménage series, coming out in late in July.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Here’s my official bio:
Shayla Black (aka Shelley Bradley) is the New York Times bestselling author of over 30 sizzling contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and historical romances for multiple print and electronic publishers. She lives in Texas with her husband, munchkin, and one very spoiled cat. In her "free" time, she enjoys reality TV, reading, and listening to an eclectic blend of music.
Shayla has won or placed in over a dozen writing contests, including the Holt Medallion, Passionate Ink's Passionate Plume, Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence, and the National Reader's Choice Awards. Romantic Times has awarded her Top Picks, a KISS Hero Award and a nomination for Best Erotic Romance.
A writing risk-taker, Shayla enjoys tackling writing challenges with every book.
Describe your writing style using just one sentence.
Emotional, intense, blistering hot relationship-driven books with a dash of suspense.
I write nearly every genre of romance because something about each of them tugs at my imagination. I love the raw emotion and passion I can convey with erotic romance. I like writing about high-octane danger and heartbreak in paranormals. I get a kick out of penning independent women falling for seductive men to a backdrop of danger in contemporaries. I have always adored telling stories about alpha rakes seducing the proper ladies into passions forbidden by their social mores in historical romances.
Do you prefer to see your work in electronic, print or both forms? Why?
The format doesn’t matter to me. If readers are getting the books in whatever format they prefer, that’s most important. I simply put the words out for them to consume in whatever medium makes them happy.
I don’t often think of books in terms of favorites. I’ve loved so many over my decades of reading. I think most everything I’ve read has contributed to my reading experience in some way or another.
For readers who have never read your work before, what book would you suggest they read first? Why?
If you’re a fan of erotic romance (or want to try more after reading 50 Shades of Gray), read WICKED TIES. It’s not only the first in the Wicked Lovers series, but it explores a woman’s journey into self-discovery by falling in love with one very sexy Cajun.
If you love paranormal romance, read TEMPT ME WITH DARKNESS. Besides being the first in the Doomsday Brethren series, it’s an introduction into a magical world full of big alpha males willing to do whatever it takes to save their world and the women they love.
If you read contemporary romance, read BOUND AND DETERMINED. It’s sexy, sassy and heartwarming with a bit of danger thrown in for spice.
If you enjoy historical romance, read ONE WICKED NIGHT. It’s passionate and wrenching, but also explores some interesting elements of the Regency period.
Tell us about your upcoming work.
In addition to books mentioned at the beginning of the interview, I’ll likely release another Masters of Ménage book with Lexi Blake in the fall/winter. Next year will see the release of:
OURS TO LOVE – Wicked Lovers 7 – May 2013
UNTITLED – Project Alpha 1 (new series) – July 2013
UNTITLED – Wicked Lovers novella – Fall 2013
I’ll have other books out in other series. More details coming soon.
I love opportunities to connect with readers. Many writers are introverts, but I’m a people person, and I take many chances every year to meet readers and just have fun. Attending conferences like this are a great way to meet new people you’ll instantly have something in common with: love of books!
Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t think to ask.
I’m a little dangerous if you just add tequila. I’m also a CRAZY multi-tasker. I think best about whatever I’m writing or want to write when I’m driving around, or listening to music, or walking. Most of my books have at least a song (if not a soundtrack) in my head that really help me channel the mood of the book as I’m writing. I can’t wait to meet readers in New Orleans!
