On Geeks and Science Fiction ... and Romance
I admit it. I’m a bit of a science fiction/fantasy geek. (“A bit?” My daughter exclaims from the next room. “Try full on geek.”) Okay- so I used to write Star Trek fan fic in junior high. So the only time I was grounded in high school was because I came home after curfew from a Star Trek convention. (Stop laughing.) Seriously Captain Picard, Captain Kirk, Spock were all dashing heroes. Don’t even get me started on Han Solo. My love for a
ll things Twilight Zone, comic book, and Ghost Hunters played around in my head. I even got my son reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Mary Stewart’s Crystal Cave series of books. (Think Merlin as a kid growing up.) So what if it was the second Star Wars movie that made me know-really know- that I wanted to do that with my life. You know, transport people into another world, a world full of adventure and heroes big and small.
So, knowing all this, why do I write romance? Because I love the happy endings. Because I’m not so good at battle scenes-I skip over them and go straight for the emotional heart of a story. Romance is the genre where you find that heart.
What does this have to do with my latest release Dream Man? I got the idea for Dream Man from a really old song called “These Dreams” by Heart. “These dreams go on when I close my eyes. Every second of the night I live another life.”
My geeked-out brain went - wow - cool. To be someone else all together when you sleep. To live a life un-expected in the real world. My muse grabbed onto the idea and ran with it. I’ve written two short stories with this theme and now
What if, I thought, what if a woman in a coma came to life at 3rd stage REM. What if it wasn’t her but someone else all together? Who would she be? A murder victim? A time traveler? A missing person trapped?
If so, who would believe her? Who would help her? What if they fell in love?
Admit it, it’s intriguing, isn’t it?
Dream Man plays with the idea that we are all somehow connected. That actions hold consequences far into the future. There may or may not be re-incarnation in this book. The geek in me lets you decide for yourself but coincidences mixed with dreams draw my characters into a very dangerous mystery that they may have tried to solve before.
The story is set in our world, a time and place we know well and yet things aren’t what they seem. Still love prevails, as it seems to in all my books, if you only believe.
